Joel Coen and Ethan Coen · 1996 · Crime, Drama, Thriller

Blinding white Minnesota blizzard, lukewarm diner coffee in styrofoam cups, and a bloody leg protruding from a roaring wood chipper. The Coen brothers deliver a masterwork of human folly where petty greed triggers an absurd bloodbath. William H. Macy is the desperate car salesman staging his wife's kidnapping; Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare are the hopelessly incompetent hired muscle; and Frances McDormand is the cheerful, pregnant police chief piecing it all together between buffet runs. The sharp contrast between folksy Midwestern politeness and sudden butchery creates an unforgettable, chilling black comedy.
