The low drone of vintage analog synthesizers, pyramidal glowing walls drenched in crimson operating-room light, and the suffocating silence of an 1983 experimental research institute. Panos Cosmatos debuts with a narcotic, sensory trip straight into the rotten heart of New Age totalitarianism. A captive psychic girl is monitored by Dr. Barry Nyle, a repressed psychopath obsessed with transcendent human consciousness. The pacing crawls with the hypnotic weight of a heavy sedative, soaked in 35mm film grain, prismatic lens flares, and pulsing synth basslines that numb the limbs. Beneath the immaculate retrofuturistic fetishism lies an eerie, cosmic void. You don't analyze this film; you ingest it until you are lost in the glowing maze.
